Garage Door Making Grinding or Squealing Noise? Here's Why

Andrew White May 5, 2026 5 min read

Your garage door used to glide. Now it sounds like a dying robot. The good news: garage door noises are diagnostic -- each type of sound points to a specific problem. Here's how to figure out what's wrong.

Grinding Noise

Most likely cause: Worn rollers. Look at the small wheels on each side of the door panels. Are they cracked, missing pieces, or wobbling? Steel rollers especially get worn down to the bearings.

Fix: Roller replacement, $289--$489 for a full set in Garland. Upgrade to nylon rollers -- they're dramatically quieter than steel.

Squealing or Squeaking

Most likely cause: Lack of lubrication. The hinges, springs, and rollers all need lubrication twice a year. Texas heat dries everything out.

Fix: Apply white lithium grease (NOT WD-40) to: hinges, roller stems, springs (light coat), and the opener chain or screw. Don't lubricate the tracks -- that just collects dust. This is a 5-minute DIY job that solves 60% of squeak complaints.

Popping Sound (Once or Twice During Travel)

Most likely cause: A roller is popping over a bent section of track, or a hinge is loose.

Fix: Have a tech inspect the tracks and tighten all the hinge bolts. Usually a $99-149 service call to fix.

Loud Bang (Single, Once)

Most likely cause: Your spring just broke. Check the spring above the door -- there should be a visible gap. Don't operate the door anymore. See our spring break guide.

Rumbling or Vibrating

Most likely cause: Loose hardware. Hinges, brackets, and bolts vibrate loose over time.

Fix: Get a socket wrench and tighten every bolt you can find on the door -- hinges, brackets, track mounts. Don't overtighten.

Whining or Grinding from the Opener

Most likely cause: Stripped opener gear or worn motor.

Fix: Sometimes it's just the gear ($150 part). Other times the whole opener is at end of life ($650-800 replacement).

Should You Just Live With It?

A noisy garage door isn't just annoying -- it's an early warning. The same wear that makes noise will eventually cause a real failure: a snapped cable, a derailed door, a dead opener. Catching it early always costs less.
