How Long Do Garage Door Springs Last? (Cycle Counts Explained)

Andrew White May 2, 2026 4 min read

People ask me this all the time: "How long should my garage door springs last?" The honest answer is "it depends." But unlike most "it depends" answers, this one has actual math behind it.

Springs Are Rated by Cycles, Not Years

A standard residential garage door spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles. One cycle = one open + one close. So one round trip equals one cycle.

Calculate Your Spring Lifespan

Count how many times you operate your garage door per day:

  • 2 cycles/day: 10,000 ÷ 2 ÷ 365 = ~14 years
  • 4 cycles/day (average family): 10,000 ÷ 4 ÷ 365 = ~7 years
  • 6 cycles/day: 10,000 ÷ 6 ÷ 365 = ~4.5 years
  • 10 cycles/day (work-from-home, kids, multiple drivers): 10,000 ÷ 10 ÷ 365 = ~2.7 years

If you use your garage door as your primary entry/exit, you're probably hitting 6-10 cycles a day without realizing it.

High-Cycle Springs Are an Option

If your standard springs only last 3 years, you can upgrade to high-cycle springs:

  • 20,000 cycle springs: About $50-75 more than standard
  • 25,000 cycle springs: About $75-100 more than standard
  • 50,000 cycle springs: Available but expensive

For a heavy-use family, high-cycle springs pay for themselves in one replacement cycle.

Texas Heat Affects Spring Life

Garage door springs in Garland have to deal with summer attic temperatures of 130°F+. Heat fatigue is real -- it slowly weakens the metal. Springs in our climate fail about 10-15% faster than the same springs in milder climates.

Signs Your Spring Is Near End of Life

  • Door feels heavier when you lift it manually
  • You see surface rust or pitting on the spring
  • The opener is straining or running hot
  • Door doesn't stay open at the halfway point (test: lift door manually halfway, let go -- it should stay)
  • Visible gaps between coils when door is closed

What About Both Springs?

Most residential doors have two springs. They're the same age and carry equal load. When one breaks, the other is at 100% of its remaining life -- but it's been carrying double the weight while you waited to fix it. We always recommend replacing both at once. The marginal labor cost is minimal and you avoid a second emergency call in 6 months.

How Much Does Spring Replacement Cost in Garland?

Standard spring replacement: $289--$389 in the Garland area. High-cycle upgrade adds $50-100. Most jobs are completed in 30-60 minutes.

Don't Wait Until They Break

If you've had your current springs more than 6-7 years and you're a heavy user, get them inspected before they fail. A pre-emptive replacement is the same price as an emergency replacement -- but you get to schedule it on your terms instead of waking up to a stuck door.
